MOVIE REVIEWS: HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY
Friday, July 11 2008    Digg!
Hellboy II: The Golden Army has added to its collection of positive early reviews it receive on Thursday. Most of the new praise is going to director Guillermo del Toro, who drew strong reviews and solid ticket sales for Pan's Labyrinth in 2006 and who has been assigned to direct The Hobbit, the prequel to Lord of the Rings. Writes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times: "He has an endlessly inventive imagination, and understands how legends work, why they entertain us and that they sometimes stand for something. For love, for example." Similarly, Elizabeth Weitzman writes in the New York Daily News: "The endlessly inventive del Toro creates visual fantasies unlike any other, and the creatures on display here are truly extraordinary. But amid all the costumes, all the action, and all the special effects, it's the humanity that makes his work so memorable." And A.O. Scott begins his review of the movie by remarking that there are moments in it "capable of delighting even the most jaded, comic-book-weary summer-blockbuster conscript. (That would be me.)"
