Maintaining that many of the "producers" of reality and game shows are actually unrepresented writers who receive fewer benefits than their counterparts on scripted shows, the Writers Guild of America has launched a campaign to organize them. TV Week reported in its online edition Thursday that the WGA West has begun sending email messages to workers on such shows urging them to participate in the "American Idol Truth Tour" aimed at FremantleMedia, the talent show's producer. "Hundreds of supporters will be traveling around the country to American Idol auditions to expose FremantleMedia's unfair treatment of its workers," the WGA said, noting that it is being supported by the Teamsters Union "and other labor allies." It was not clear what actions the union plans to carry out during the auditions, which begin in San Francisco on July 16.
