CUBAN SAYS THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS ONLINE HDTV
Wednesday, July 16 2008    Digg!
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who made a fortune during the "Internet bubble" when he sold his broadcast.com, which provided online multimedia and streaming video, to Yahoo!, says that much of the current talk about providing high-definition television on the Internet is misleading. "What is shocking about the entire attempt to turn the Internet into a TV/HDTV distribution medium is how much people lie to themselves about what is actually happening," Cuban wrote on his website. Cuban maintains that providing streaming HDTV on the Internet system is a virtual impossibility and that those who wish to distribute video digitally should employ traditional cable and satellite distribution systems instead. Doing so, Cuban writes, could also eliminate digital video recorders and large storage boxes -- and in the process give parents greater control over what their children can see. "I personally would love to create a play list, customized with a picture of my daughter, her name as the channel name, with a play list or on-demand list of shows that are appropriate for her," he wrote. Such a system might allow him to mark personal videos of his daughter's activities, like ballet recitals, to be accessed by family and friends. "There is no reason to reinvent TV over the net when TV distributed as TV works," he concluded.
